How to Choose a Pet Sitter by karly

Have you ever gone out of town and left your next door neighbor, or someone without professional pet care experience in charge of caring for your pets, watering your plants, and taking care of your house? Sometimes things will be just fine. However, many times your pets aren't being cared for in the same manner they would be if you were still home. How do you go about finding the right pet sitter? Here are a few tips to get you started on the right path of finding a professional pet sitter.

Ask For Recommendations

Choosing a company recommended by a friend or family member can give you peace of mind. It’s easy to trust someone that comes with a glowing recommendation from someone close to you. Facebook even offers a “looking for recommendations” feature that is great for looking for these types of companies. It can also give you a good idea of what is available in your area.

Choose an Experienced Service Provider

The kid from two blocks over may cost less, but when it comes down to it, an established pet sitting service is the way to go to find the best care for your pet. Pick a business, or at least someone, who is licensed, bonded, and insured through the proper organizations. Also, try to find a company that has put its employees through additional training like a PetTech certification. You will feel better knowing that your pet is in the care of someone who is trained to handle pet first aid and CPR.

Support Local Businesses

While nationwide companies (like Rover) may be easy to try, it is hard to ensure the quality of the care that your pet is receiving when operating on that large of a scale. A smaller, local business will have a better idea of the type of people they employ and be better able to guarantee the very best care for your pet.

Keep Your Options Open

Talk to more than one company. You don’t want to schedule a consultation with only one company just to end up not liking them, or feeling stuck with your decision because you are on a time crunch. Schedule consultations with two or three service providers, and don’t be afraid to leave it with “I’ll get back to you.”

Things to Look For

How thorough is their paperwork? Do they ask a few basic questions or do they want to know every single detail about your pet? Pay attention to how they interact with your pet. They are there for them, after all!

Ask your own questions

Asking questions is important to make sure that your pet gets cared for according to your standards. Here's a few we recommend:

Do you do background checks on all of your employees?

At Paws Around Motown, all of our employees and contractors must pass a background check before they can care for your pets.

Do you accommodate pets with special care needs?

We have experience caring for pets with all sorts of special needs. From basic medicine to insulin injections, we have seen and done it all.

How much experience does the pet sitter have?

Although we are always growing, Paws Around Motown has been providing pet services since 2014 and many of our employees have been with us since the very beginning! In addition, many of our employees have previous pet care experience from places like veterinarians and kennels.

What is the minimum required number of visits per day?

If you're leaving your pet in our care all day, we require a minimum of three visits per day for dogs, and one per day for cats. This ensures your pets are getting the care they need.

What is the minimum length of service required?

We require each dog visit to be a minimum of 45 minutes, and 30 minutes for cat visits. In our experience, this is the minimum amount of time that we need to provide your pet(s) with premium care.

Are you bonded and insured?

Rest assured, all of our employees and contractors are bonded and insured.

Have you participated in any pet care training, such as first aid or CPR?

Not only do we have certified first aid and CPR pet sitters, but our owner Becky is also a certified first aid and CPR trainer! All of our team members receive monthly field training to improve their pet care. In addition, we hold regular training sessions for topics like loose leash walking and animal behavior training.
